Introduction
On July 7th, 2025, Uranus entered the sign of Gemini, after transiting Taurus since May 2018. The planet of revolutionary change will only get a small taste of the wild winds of the mercurial twins before returning to the bull on November 8th. This will bring the normally spontaneous planet back to earth until April 26th, 2026, when it will fly off to the airy realm of Gemini for good... until it dives into the oceans of Cancer in May 2033. However, that will not be for another 8 years, so until then, here's an overview of what we can essentially expect.
As the first planet to be discovered with the modern telescope, Uranus is basically "the rebel" of our solar system, a force of both creativity and disruption. Its official discovery revolutionized the history of astrology as we know it. It lives up to its funny name (and yes, it's funny regardless of how you pronounce it) by poking fun at everything that society holds dear, sometimes to the point of being an asshole who throws our lives upside down. The teal-colored planet was actually named after the ancient sky god in Greek mythology, the personification of the primordial chaos pre-existing all creation. He was the husband of Gaia, who is essentially mother nature, the earth goddess, who he impregnated with life by sending rain down from the heavens (and by the way, the etymology for the word urination literally does come from the Greek god, Uranus!). This essentially forms the basis of its astrological association with innovation and the birth of all things exciting & new.

The sign of Gemini, the twins, is ruled by Mercury, the trickster god. Its element is air, and its modality is mutable. All of these things combined arguably make it the most chaotic of all the zodiac signs, like a wild wind you can't predict. With Uranus moving into such a crazy territory, we can surely expect some interesting surprises to take place! Some of this can be very good, of course, some very bad, some of it neutral and lots in between. The theme of this transit is essentially this: expect the unexpected, or better yet, just stop expecting.
On a positive note, this can be a very exciting time! It's interesting when you consider that Gemini is ruled by the planet (Mercury) that some modern astrologers consider Uranus to be the "higher octave" of. Mercury is the planet of the mind, as well as communication. This makes me wonder if, at least on some level, Uranus's transit through here could bright about a higher level of consciousness for some. In any case, the planet's creative, inventive and free-thinking ways are especially relevant here. There may be changes, and innovations, regarding the way we think and/or communicate with each other. There may be insights and greater understanding about the nature of consciousness and thought itself. Remember though, this is a liberating transit so this should be about freeing your mind, freeing your speech, rather than restricting or controlling it. Flexibility, curiosity, and open-mindedness are the best traits to have with this transit in the sky.

Historical Transits of Uranus in Gemini: the 1940's
History is not linear but cyclical, and a look at astrological transits give us insight into how these patterns of time tend to repeat themselves. As unpredictable as this particular transit might be, if we're going to even try to predict how it may play out, it helps to look back on how it manifested in the past. On this note, Uranus's last transit through Gemini took place in the 1940's or more specifically, between August 1941 and June 1949 (minus some brief retrogrades back to Taurus, where it made a conjunction with Jupiter, and quick dips into Cancer). As much as this placement loves shattering expectations, this decade was indeed one of enormous changes, just as you would expect.
It was in 1945, during Uranus's transit through Gemini, that the first programmable electronic digital computer was invented. This device known as the ENIAC was built for the purpose of making mathematical calculations for the United States military. On a similar note, this is also when the British mathematician & scientist, Alan Turing, was able to break the code of the Nazi's Enigma machine. These are just a few examples of how the revolutionary Uranus can ignite it's potential for genius when in the highly intelligent, brainy, and multi-talented sign of Gemini. This period also marked the beginning of various mind-expanding fields of study, from quantum mechanics to game theory and cryptography.

Other technological advances and innovations that came out of this transit include the first mobile telephone, the first transistor radio, the first polaroid camera, and the first color television. All of these inventions share the commonality of being used for communication purposes, albeit through different mediums & formats (i.e. sound vs. visuals) but that only makes sense given the air sign's association with communication as well as variety! As an air sign, it's interesting to consider the developments in air travel that took place with Uranus in Gemini, including the invention of jet fuel which allowed plans to fly faster. Similarly, the space age was just beginning (i.e. the Roswell incident, which many people viewed as evidence of the existence of extraterrestrials is one example of this), and the first ever photograph of the earth had been taken from space. On a similar note, this transit coincided with the breaking of the sound barrier, and also, the development of radar technology. This should all serve as a real life reminder of the air element's connection to sound, and therefore, communication.
Likewise, new schools of thought become popular at this time, such as the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in France. This was a philosophy focused on the freedom, responsibility and choice of each individual human to make their own meaning, themes that could easily be associated with Uranus in Gemini. Many rejected religion at this time in favor of more humanist worldviews, as the events of this period led many to question what they understood to be the traditional order of things. For example, it was only in 1948 that a United States Supreme Court case ended religious instruction in public schools.

Since we're already on the topic of education, Gemini is a sign very much associated with education and all things pertaining to the human mind. It should come as no surprise, then, that Uranus's transit here would cause revolutionary breakthroughs in these areas. For example, in the United Kingdom, the Education Act was signed in 1944, ensuring all children had the right to a school education, as well as free school meals. In the United States, the G.I. Bill provided funding for returning soldiers to access higher education at college, universities, trade and technical schools, while black Americans fought for their equal right to an education and states began to desegregate. Meanwhile, as a response to World War 2, the American government launched its first and only universal childcare program, and other parts of the world did the same. On another note, the Fulbright Act promoted cultural exchange amongst students and academics
In addition to education, Uranus's transit through this Mercury-ruled sign air sign affected the human mind in other ways. It was in 1943, for example, that the psychedelic properties of LSD were discovered, arguably bringing about a huge revolution in consciousness, after its inventor, Swiss chemist, Albert Hoffman, accidently ingested some of it himself. Meanwhile, the field of psychology became more formalized, changing the way we think about the human mind. Of course, some of the procedures that were widely used during this period, such as lobotomies, are no longer advocated and now considered harmful. However, this period also gave birth to the humanistic psychology of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow (including his theory about the hierarchy of needs) which emphasized a more person-centered approach to the relationship between therapist and patient.

Of course, these were some dark times too given that they were the World War Two years. While World War 2 technically started when Uranus was still in Taurus (and intensified during the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction) the United States officially joined soon after Uranus's move into the sign of the twins, after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The U.S.A. quickly allied with its former enemy, the United Kingdom and forming what they call a "special relationship," which we could say is like a sibling-like bond characteristic of the mythological twins Gemini is associated with. This mutable air sign can, of course, be quite fickle and while both countries initially allied with the Soviet Union against the Axis of Fascism, this period eventually gave way to a Cold War between these countries, as the enemies battled for the world domination of capitalism vs. communism. A lot of this was, perhaps, partially due to the revolutionary nuclear power brought on by the Manhattan Project, which had successfully created two twin atom bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki in Japan, weapons with the power to destroy like no other and forever changing the world. Of course, as the social butterfly that Gemini is, as a result of this war, this transit ultimately united many nations together into organizations such as the United Nations and NATO.
On a more positive note, with Uranus in a free-spirited air sign like Gemini, this time brought about a growing awareness of the need for decolonization, freedom, liberation and independence. The British Raj, who had colonized India for about 200 years (which interestingly enough coincides with the last time Uranus had been in Gemini prior to this), finally left India although this ended in its partition with Pakistan and the assassination of the independence movement's leader, Mahatma Gandhi. Meanwhile, Iceland declared its independence from Denmark, Indonesia became independent from the Netherlands, and Korea was liberated from Japan, while Philippines declared itself independent from the United States and British rule in Burma came to an end. On a similar note, the French settlers in Syria and Lebanon were forced to evacuate, and the Italian monarchy became a republic. The need for Jewish liberation, of course, became apparent after the horrors of the holocaust. The State of Israel was created in response to this, although doing this involved the colonization of Palestine.

As far as anything pop culture related is concerned, as a sign associated with communication, ruled by Mercury, the messenger of the gods himself, it should come as no surprise that radio shows were very popular at this time. However, other forms of media, such as cartoon shorts, began to experience a surge in popularity too, along with exciting forms of music such as swing, big band, jazz, crooners like Frank Sinatra and revolutionary folk artists like Woody Guthrie. Pin-up models like the actress, Rita Hayworth, represented the glamour and beauty of the era's feminine ideal. Meanwhile, for men, particularly black, Latino, and other immigrants associated with the hipster, hepcat or jazz subcultures of the time, zoot suits were very popular, sparking backlash from anti-Mexican racists known as the "Zoot Suit Riots" in Los Angeles, California.
This was also a key period in the world of literature. Uranus's revolutionary ways showed brightly through the written works that were published at this time. Books such as the published diary of the teenage Anne Frank exposed the truth of the Nazi's horrendous crimes of genocide. Meanwhile, dystopian novels such as George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm warned readers of a harrowing future not too different from our own now, and helped introduce people to more radical anarchist & socialist ideas and politics. Many also consider this era to be the "golden age of science fiction" demonstrating the clever, creative, forward-thinking, and even futuristic nature of Uranus in Gemini through the works of legendary authors such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, while the popularity of this genre quickly expanded to the big screen, mostly in the form of Hollywood monster movies.

Older Transits of Uranus in Gemini
Before that, Uranus was in Gemini from 1858 to 1865. What's interesting about this particular transit is that Neptune was in Aries, then, too, just as it is now, in the 21st century. This particular combination of energies does show division. While Neptune in Aries is all about the collective idealization of independence & sovereignty, as well as conflict & war, Uranus in Gemini shows polarity involved. In other words, this may be one country - or one group - splitting into two, or splintering off into various factions. With this in mind, it makes sense that the American Civil War happened at this time, with the North-South divide of the United States becoming so polarized. The racial division between black and white people can also be seen with this transit. Uranus in Gemini also shows off its revolutionary, free-thinking and freedom-seeking qualities here by helping to put an end to slavery.
Of course, it is important to consider the technological advances that happened during this period too and how they may relate to the sign of Gemini, showing us a pattern behind what may be happening now. Attempts at creating the first transatlantic telegraph cable took place at this time, along with an early telephone. The first color photograph was taken at this time, along with the first comet to ever be photographed. The first sound recording took place during this time, the first aerial photograph and the first underground railway opened up in London. Meanwhile, as discussed in my article on Neptune in Aries, this was also a key period in literature. It was the golden age of Russian literature, for example. Newspapers also became widespread during this time.

It might also be of interest to briefly look at Uranus's 1774-1781 transit through Gemini. This was the last time this transit coincided with Pluto in Aquarius, until now. Both the American Revolution and the French Revolution took place during this time (meaning both planets are currently experiencing their Uranus Return) mirroring the revolutionary qualities associated with these two planets. This is also when the invention of the seam engine took place, along with the Industrial Revolution and the period known as the "Age of Enlightenment"
Events: the invention of the steam engine took place at this time, the Industrial Revolution, the Age of Enlightenment, with major changes occurring in all areas of society include economics, politics, philosophy, religion and education, with the idea of "human rights" arguably being a relatively new consideration (although I'm a bit skeptical, as this idea is super hard for me to wrap my head around).
If we go even further back, we find out that the first printing press was invented during Uranus's transit through Gemini in 1455. Meanwhile, the first newspaper was published during a later transit of Uranus through Gemini in 1605, with the first regularly printed newspaper becoming available in Germany later during that same transit in 1609. The King James Bible was also published during this time. Plus, many scientific advances were discovered at this time, too, including the invention of the telescope which eventually allowed planets like Uranus itself to be discovered!

Conclusion
In conclusion, Uranus in Gemini brought about revolutionary changes to the technology and social spheres of human kind, both good and bad, to extreme degrees. While in some ways, this transit brought liberation and freedom, in others, it brought war division and chaos. Such is the mercurial nature of the mutable air sign. Most of all, however, it brought inventions relating to communication and the exchange of information, typical Gemini traits!
As much as I wanted to avoid this, I feel like, due to the shortening of our collective attention spans, I had to once again, separate my article into two parts. While this article, Part 1, includes the introduction about the general archetypal meaning of the planet Uranus in the sign of Gemini, along with a look back in time at how this transit influenced the world throughout history, Part 2 will look more deeply at what is to come in the near future. So stay tuned!
Of course, how this transit affects you will depend on the influence it has on your own unique natal chart. Those with major placements (i.e. angles, luminaries or personal planets) in mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) are the most likely to be affected by this transit, while the other air signs (Libra & Aquarius) may feel its influence to some extent too. A lot also depends on what house Gemini occupies within your birth chart, as this will tell you what area of life these changes are most likely to take place in. In any case, you can learn more about how this transit will affect you personally by booking a reading with me here.
