Waking Up: November 30's Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

On Monday, November 30th, at 4:30 AM, there will be a Lunar Eclipse at 8'38 degrees Gemini. The Lunar Eclipse will be visible from the Americas, Oceania, most of Asia, as well as parts of Europe (such as the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia) affecting these parts of the world the most. Here's what to expect.

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Earth stands between the Moon and the Sun, blocking off sunlight. Since the Moon has no light of its own, a Lunar Eclipse will look to us as if the Moon has disappeared. While a Solar Eclipse always coincides with the New Moon, a Lunar Eclipse always coincides with the Full Moon. A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and the Moon are in opposition with each other, and represents the peak of climax of the lunar cycle. Essentially, a Lunar Eclipse has the same energy of a typical Full Moon except even stronger, and while the effects of an average Full Moon last from about two to four weeks, the effects of a Lunar Eclipse can last up to six months.

Eclipses are know to influence events that happen on a mass scale, particularly in the areas of the world where it is visible. But since the Moon rules emotions, a Lunar Eclipse is also likely to coincide with big and dramatic events of a more personal nature. They tend to bring out our darkest, most heavy emotions. Feelings we've kept long buried may come rising out from the surface. A Lunar Eclipse is often said to draw out the shadow side - of both ourselves and others - but if we're willing to be honest with ourselves and accept ourselves for who we are - both the good and the bad - they can be a wonderful time for healing and transformation., helping us to yield insights and revelations about both ourselves and the people around us.

It's always important to note that eclipses always occur when the Sun is near the orbit of one or the two nodes. The North Node and South Node are lunar points representing our karma. They are always in opposite signs from one another. While the North Node represents where we are going, our purpose, what we came here to master, the South Node represents our karma and past lives, what we're familiar with and need to let go of. This is what makes an eclipse such a crucial time for evolution and growth.

November 2020's Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

November 30's Lunar Eclipse or Full Moon will be located at 8'38 degrees of Gemini, a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury and represented by a pair of two twins, often identified with Castor & Pollux from Greek Mythology. It is a symbol of duality and with Moon, planet of emotions, in this unpredictable and changeable sign, there may be dramatic ups and downs in regards to how we're feeling. If things seem fantastic now, they may fall apart in an instant or if you can't imagine things getting any worse, a twist of fate may worked out in your favor. Alternatively, however, Gemini is a symbol of communication and connection. The Lunar Eclipse could bring us into contact with new & powerful ideas or a meaningful conversation allowing us to express our truths and enlighten us with better understanding of others. Collective, the media, whether this be the news media or social media, may play a big role in influencing people's emotions.

The Moon is in the first decan of Gemini, ruled by Jupiter (according to the Chaldean order of the planets) and Mercury by triplicity, both planets concerned in some way with learning and knowledge. The Moon is just one degree away from the star, Aldebaran, a giant orange star of the nature of Mars located in the Left Eye of Taurus. It is associated with the Archangel Michael , commander of the Heavenly Host and associated with military success and honors as well as integrity and righteousness, which can at times lead to dissent and revolution. In the charts of countries (and other event charts) the Moon is said to represent the people, and the Moon conjunct the star Aldebaran can indicate riots and rebellion, people courageously standing up to fight against injustices (especially in the parts of the world where this eclipse is most visible). Meanwhile, the Moon's proximity to the North Node indicates knowledge or growth of a more spiritual, as well as emotional, nature.

However, the Moon in Gemini will temporarily be eclipsed by the Sun in the fiery sign of Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. The centaur or archer is associated with freedom and adventurism or exploration but because it's bow and arrow aim towards the sky for something higher, it is also associated with religion or moralism and philosophical wisdom or truth. Often it is associated with faith, hope and positivity, but being so close to the South Node and just one degree from Antares, a red Mars-like star in the Heart of the Scorpio constellation, it might be another sign of religious or philosophical conflicts, potentially fueled by the media. Antares is associated with the Archangel Uriel, who was said to warn Noah of the Great Flood. The star is associated with wars, conflict, accidents and destruction. With the Sun on Antares, the Eclipse might also expose hypocrites, greed and insincerity in others.

The Full Moon's closest aspect is it's inconjunction to Venus at 10'57 degrees Scorpio. Essentially, an inconjunction means that the two planets have nothing in common, since they share neither element nor modality, and that makes it hard for them to get along. With Moon inconjunct Venus, we may feel a lack of emotional fulfillment in our relationships at this time. Our needs may not be met by our partners and our desires may feel out of reach. Meanwhile, the Sun is inconjunct Uranus at 07'32 degrees Taurus, making it difficult for us to live freely or embrace the unique parts of who we are. More interestingly, however, due to these inconjunctions, the upcoming Lunar Eclipse highlights the opposition between Venus and Uranus.

With Venus opposite Uranus, this eclipse may cause sudden and unexpected break-ups or conflicts between two people. Venus is actually in detriment when in the sign of Scorpio: the planet of love and harmony is not said to feel comfortable in such a dark and heavy sign known for its all-consuming emotions and passion. If one partner is in any way smothering, manipulative, possessive or co-dependent (Venus in Scorpio), the other may feel a greater urge for freedom (Uranus in Taurus) and the relationship may come to a halt. Likewise, if one is unreliable or inconsistent, the other may come to the sudden realization that this dynamic isn't serving them. Uranus is nicknamed "the Great Awakener," for a reason and Venus in Scorpio is known for exposing the truth about others. So, a dramatic separation may also be due to a secret coming out or what were once 'little issues' rising up to the surface, unable to be ignored for any longer. This may be especially likely for any relationships started six months ago while Venus was Retrograde in Gemini and square Neptune.

If single, however, this opposition between Venus & Uranus may lead you to exploring taboos and this can be very enlightening. However, impulsive and risky behavior is likely so it's best to be careful. For example, this could manifest in, I don't know, being so lonely and bored with your isolation that you go on a date with a stranger in a crowded bar when you probably should be quarantining: not safe. But it may be hard for us to avoid falling into temptation at this time. With Venus in Scorpio, our feelings can become all-consuming but acting on those feelings may very well get us into trouble.

In either case, whether you're partnered, single or just dating casually, those affected by this eclipse may feel their love life is confusing or unstable at this point in time.

On a collective level, there may be protests around the globe, especially in the Americas, Oceania, East Asia, the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia, related to woman's rights, whether it be a rebellion against outdated gender norms or a sexist code of law. Since Venus also rules beauty and cosmetics, there may be protests against those industries or standards that are held, or our values may change; I.E. there could be a re-prioritizing of things we spend money on. There might be an explosion of revolutionary or just plain innovative art or music or a general change in fashion trends, as well as a change in how people love or relate to others i.e. we may see more of a shift to online dating and long distant relationships as the pandemic numbers seem to be increasing and many are still more or less confined to their homes.

Lastly, I want to mention the role of Mercury, since it is, after all, Gemini's ruling planet. Along with Venus, the planet of communication and thought will be located at 27'46 degrees of the sign, Scorpio, known for its deep, penetrating and detective-like qualities. Mercury in Scorpio will be separating from a sextile with Jupiter at 26'01 degrees Capricorn and applying to a sextile with Saturn at 28'21 degrees of it's home sign. Despite whatever other conflicts might be brought on by this Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, this shows a certain degree of hope. Although it's a weaker aspect compared to the others', it does indicate concrete and easy communication as well as deep focus and strength of mind. There is stability in both our thinking and our communication with others, which can allow us to get things done and even help us manifest the reality we want.

It may help to think back to whatever intentions you set around the New Moon in Scorpio, for they should be coming into fruition at this time, as well as six months back to the New Moon in Gemini. Because eclipses come in cycle, themes related to the Solar Eclipse in Cancer or the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn back in July, as well as (perhaps most importantly) June's Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius, may also repeat themselves. Meanwhile, any intentions you set now should come to fruition by either the Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14th or the Solar Eclipse in Gemini on June 10th, 2021.

To learn more about how this will affect you personally, check your natal chart for any placements between 3 and 13 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) for those placements will be most especially affected.

In essence, with any Lunar Eclipse in Gemini, themes of communication and knowledge are said to be highlighted, but with the Full Moon conjunct Aldebaran, we can better expect riots in the areas of the world affected by the eclipse and righteous rebellion. Meanwhile, with the Sun in Sagittarius conjunct Antares, we might expect violent conflict and even a full-blown war. On a personal level, with the Venus-Uranus opposition being activated by this eclipse, we might expect sudden and unexpected break-ups and shake-ups in our love lives or perhaps an ability to control our impulses or avoid temptation. On a collective level, however, this is another indicator of revolutionary energy. This revolution may have something to do with women's rights, gender or sexuality (since these are all ruled by Venus) but since eclipses are said to happen in cycles of about six months, perhaps the protests against racism and police brutality we saw from roughly May through July may also either see a comeback or hopefully create actionable changes and reap in positive results. The same goes for any other protests against injustice that may have happened in other parts of the globe. Overall, this is a very chaotic and changeable but revolutionary energy, and we'll like see major changes both collectively and in our personal lives.
