Introduction: Saturn in Aries
Saturn entered Aries on May 24th, 2025, and as usual, I am late to writing about it. I would like to blame my recent Saturn Return for this, but now that it's finally changed signs, you'd think I'd be better off... except, wait! Saturn goes retrograde in July, taking one last deep dive into the waters of Pisces on September 1st, so while I may be getting a short break from my Saturn Return, it's technically not over yet, is it? In any case, Saturn will re-enter the sign of Aries on February 13th, 2026, making its historic conjunction to Neptune (which will require an article of its own) later that month. This is when Saturn's transit through the sign of the ram can truly begin, riding out the blaze of its cardinal fires until April 12th, 2028, when it finally leaves Aries for the more earthy realm of Taurus. Here's what this means!
It's easy to see how the ancients may have developed their view of Saturn as a planet of limitation & restriction. Once believed to be the furthest planet from the Sun, it is as if its orbit drew out the boundary line between our solar system and the chaos of outer space. While this border can be seen as a positive safety net, Saturn's long distance from the light of the Sun is simultaneously what earned the ringed-planet its reputation for being the "great malefic," a symbol of spiritual darkness. Whichever way you see it, Saturn is essentially a symbol for matter. Its place in the cosmos defines the dimensional boundaries of time and space that govern out material universe, preventing it from falling into the primordial abyss. This is why, in astrological terms, the planet functions like an authority figure, keeping us in line with the rules, while perhaps confusingly, as a sort of adversary figure to the star of this system, it may oppose them too, hence its ancient association with the rebel archetype. So, now that we've gone over the basics of what Saturn represents, let's talk about how it can function differently depending on what sign it's in. More specifically, what can we expect from its transit into Aries, and how will it differ from Saturn in Pisces or any other sign?

Saturn in Aries vs. Saturn in Pisces
In the sign of Pisces, the boundaries associated with Saturn are sometimes said to be dissolved, particularly now, with Neptune involved. Saturn in Pisces can also, however, give boundaries to what is boundless, as I believe it does in my own birth chart. For example, this might be through the translation of mystical experiences into something more tangible like an organized religious practice, or the scientific study of spiritual phenomena. Saturn in Pisces can also express itself through the preservation of ancient spiritual wisdom. However, over the last couple of years since Saturn entered Pisces back in March 2023, the opposite seems to have been true: the boundaries have become boundless! Basically, there seems to be no limit to the limitations placed on us, no logical rule behind the rules we're required to follow, and the organizations that run our world appear to be completely disorganized!
So, perhaps, it is more accurate to say that Pisces has drowned Saturn, pulling it deeper into a sea of confusion until all of its rules & laws have become meaningless. As meaningless as they are, however, they are still there. In fact, if anything, they've become inflated! Remember that Pisces is ruled by Jupiter, planet of expansion, making the list of rules we're expected to adhere to effectively endless. Not only that, but with Jupiter in Gemini, sign of its detriment, and square Saturn during its transit through Pisces, this list has become so long as to become contradictory or even straight-up nonsensical. The problem is that this lack of logic does not actually stop it from controlling our lives! The committed & disciplined Saturn is not a planet known to surrender. Even when it appears to be sinking into an ocean of absurdity, it manages to somehow float, fighting back against the current with an ever-expanding list of increasingly severe punishments that add to our collective feeling of oppression & depression. Sure, we can say that the system is breaking, but this doesn't mean it's broken yet, especially when the malfunctions & glitches only make our experience of it even worse! This is where the shift into Aries changes things.

It's probably best if we think of Saturn as like an old man, straining to swim against a terrible tide. The old man finally reaches the shore, where delirious after the long journey, for a minute, he becomes convinced that he's reached the long-time goal of returning to his native homeland of Capricorn, only to be in for a shock when he finds himself face-to-face with strong young swimmer who pushes him back in & demands a race. Saturn had managed to survive the whacky waters of the Piscean Ocean by exercising his inborn qualities of hard work and perseverance, virtues that he had been encouraged to develop even after re-locating to the country of Aquarius. However, he's in Aries country now, and this individualistic culture is especially foreign to him. Unlike Saturn, the strong young athletes of Aries country do not need to work hard to maintain their energy and stamina. Ruled by King Mars (i.e. the soldier of our solar system), the people of Ram Island hit their opponents hard & quick, driven less by commitment than by impulse & instinct. Saturn is an old man, already tired from his long journey, and given the hot weather of the foreign climate, he's going to have to work more than twice as hard as usual if he wants to survive against a competitor so naturally born & raised to compete.
Aries represents the archetype of the warrior: tough, strong and ready to fight back. The ruling planet, Mars, gives this competitive cardinal fire sign just as much ruthlessness as Saturn has. However, while Saturn's ruthlessness is rooted in its dedication & discipline, the ram is defined by its qualities of courage & confidence. Like I described above in my metaphor of Saturn as an aging swimmer, the system may have been able to work hard and push through the chaos of Saturn's transit through Pisces, but it will have a much harder time persevering through Saturn's shift into Aries. Aries is the warrior of the zodiac: tough, competitive and easily ready to fight back. In other words, while Saturn in Pisces may be said to dissolve boundaries, Saturn in Aries straight-up burns them to the ground, smashing the system to pieces and setting it ablaze amidst a cloud of smoke.

Taking this interpretation into consideration, it should come as no surprise that Aries is actually the sign of Saturn's fall. This means that Saturn tends to struggle much more in Aries than it does most other signs. Of course, when viewing the planet as the great malefic and the source of all-that-is-bad, its debilitation can, perhaps, be seen in a positive light. For example, it might suggest an end to the challenges associated with Saturn (i.e. depression, oppression, etc.) as well as the corrupt system that it's often believed to represent. That said, as Aries opposite sign, Libra, knows, things are almost never entirely black & white (hence being the sign of Saturn's exaltation) and while a weak Saturn placement can certainly bring benefits, it can also bring challenges of its own. Those born with an Aries Saturn in their natal charts know these struggles all too well and they better brace themselves, because in the wake of their Saturn Return, they're about to receive a double dose of them!
Despite being nicknamed "the great malefic" the reality is that all planets and signs serve their purpose in balance, and with Saturn in the sign of its fall, we might miss the qualities of order and organization usually associated with it. For example, though Aries is all about getting things done in the short term, those with Saturn in Aries may struggle with long-term goals, due whether it's setting them or sticking through to them. In fact, that could be how all of us feel, as a collective, during the course of this transit. Immediate actions may seem to misalign with long-term intentions, with impulsivity leading to regret or even one's own downfall! Similarly, because Aries is a sign associated with individualism and ego, as well, being the sign of the Sun's exaltation, pride and/or simply failure to accept help or collaboration with others can be another source of limitation with Saturn here. Perhaps, it could even cause a sense of myopia and collective distrust, as we become unable to see, hear, understand, trust or empathize with anything outside of ourselves.

In any case, an ending is always only a new beginning. When looking at the zodiac from seasonal perspective, we can recognize why many astrologers have labelled Pisces as the last and Aries as the first, given its correspondence with the Vernal (or Spring) Equinox. From this point of view, then, perhaps Saturn's shift into Aries means that one order will end only for a new one to begin, and guess what? This time, it is ours to create, and we, yes all of us, as individuals have the power to act & choose how we want it to go. This is where we can use the power of Saturn to our advantage, by making friends with the old man rather than impulsively jumping to the conclusion that he's an enemy, as the citizens of Aries Land are prone to do. Essentially, changing the system and changing the world ultimately starts with changing ourselves... at least on some level. I get how this axiom might sound like some sort of anti-revolutionary propaganda or something but it may help to think about it in another way. Let's imagine, for a second, that you actually had the power to purify the world and rid it of all the things you don't like: even then, the second you started behaving in those ways that you don't like seeing in others, it will have a domino effect, inviting that energy back into the world and messing your vision up all over again. From this point of view, the limitations that Saturn places on our egos in the short-term can actually strengthen our sense of individual freedom in the long-run. By learning self-control, we learn self-determination.
So, if the end is just a new beginning, the question is: are we self-aware enough to make this new beginning a good one? Can we make it a good one: say, one based on harmony rather than hierarchy? If we can do that, maybe Saturn won't need to be the "great malefic" anymore. If our old man, Saturn, can be born anew, and like Aries, the baby of the zodiac, become like a child again, pure-hearted and comfortable in his own skin, then, maybe he wouldn't feel the need to control things so much anymore, or at least not to the point of causing harm. Maybe, he'll learn to accept his place in the grand scheme of the cosmos while allowing others their space too, proudly understanding the value of his job without trying to make himself the center of the universe... or maybe, I'm just a weird girl whose Saturn Return has caused her to lose her mind, given that I now seem to be personifying the planets.

Aspects
As individualistic as our old man, Saturn, might be when traveling through Aries, it is important to remember that no transit ever really exists in isolation. It is only one string in the great cosmic web. So, let's take a look at some of the aspects it will be making during its current journey through the sign of the ram.
For starters, there is no question (at least in my opinion) that the most significant aspect that Saturn will be making is its conjunction to Neptune, particularly since they'll be meeting at the first degree of the (at least theoretically) first sign. While these two planets remained near each other through Saturn's recent transit through Pisces, and are continuing to do so in the sign of Aries, it will technically not be exact until February 2026, an event so significant that it will require an article of its own. That said, it might be helpful to provide a general idea of how this Saturn-Neptune conjunction might be manifesting already. Essentially, I believe the boundaries that define our material reality (Saturn) are starting to disassemble & disintegrate (Neptune) while perhaps, paradoxically, the spiritual world (Neptune) is becoming a more accessible reality for us (Saturn). As we become more aware that the true underlying reality of this universe is defined by energy, vibration, music, we see that matter matters less than we think it does. For some readers, this may sound a bit extreme, but this is not to say matter is bad (i.e. the absurd idea that Saturn is actually, on a very literal level, Satan!) or that it doesn't matter at all (which is even more absurd).

It's simply to say that we, as spiritual beings, are the ones with the power to manipulate matter toward our own ends rather than the other way around (and this is especially true when considering the nature of the sign it is in and the degree!). Honestly, you really don't even have to be "spiritual" to get my point, as this is especially relevant on the political level more than anything else. As we're often made to think we are powerless against the system and "the way things are" at the end of the day, none of these things are actually "real" in a material sense, but something that humans chose to imagine into existence. So, why do we think that power was suddenly lost, forcing us to accept what's there as if it were as objective as 1+1=2? The "reality" that our long forgotten ancestors may have imagined for us has become outdated, the roots of it no longer understood by us, and with Saturn meeting Neptune at the last degree of the last sign, this system has taken its now-absurd traditional of following orders to its most nonsensical conclusion, eating away at its own tail like the serpent in the Garden of Eden, until by the time they meet again, at the first degree of the first sign, there is no other choice left but to move in a new direction, to create our New Eden and to sing our new song.
Meanwhile, Jupiter entered the sign of Cancer shortly after Saturn's ingress into Aries (which is yet another astrological event that I'm late to writing about!). Jupiter recently made a square to both Saturn and Neptune, which went exact on June 15th (a few days after the Full Moon in Sagittarius, a sign that Jupiter rules). While Saturn is in the sign of its detriment, Cancer is in the sign of Jupiter's exaltation, making it stronger, at least in some ways. This is yet another symbol of positivity outshining negativity, good triumphing over evil and spirituality overpowering the limitations of the material realm and/or as is more often the case, the limitations of our own minds. Perhaps the ancient ancestral wisdom associated with the fertile Jupiter in Cancer will help us to nurture the world in abundance, teaching us how to use the autonomous nature of Saturn in Aries to take responsibility for our own lives rather than avoid it further. However, while Jupiter does look like it is winning, this does not to say that the battle of polarities doesn't exist, and this transit may cause us to experience a lot of ups & downs, in practically all dimensions of life. Jupiter in Cancer's key to success is in remembering that no matter how "bad" outer circumstances may appear now with Saturn in Aries, there is still some room for cultivating happiness from within, planting the seeds until the garden grows so beautifully that even Saturn has to admit Jupiter is talented and the two become friends.

Let's also take a look at the ingress chart for Saturn's entrance into Aries, which took place on May 24th, 2025 (or the 25th, depending on what time zone you are in!) at 11:40 PM EST. The image is copied and pasted above.
There are actually many positive things to see here. For example, in addition to its conjunction to Neptune emphasizing the power of imagination in shaping reality, Saturn will also be making two sextiles: one to the revolutionary Pluto in Aquarius, and the other to the Sun at 4 degrees Gemini. Perhaps, one way of looking at this, is to see that through the power of communicating with others, we can use the light within to transform the reality of our existing social structures and create a new beginning that's beneficial for all of us. While I'd be lying if there weren't any potential concerns to be had from looking at this chart, as well, especially given the resemblance of some of the other accompanying transits have to those of World War 2, there is absolutely no reason to assume doom and gloom either.

On one hand, Mercury conjunct Uranus in Taurus could inspire new and more creative ways of thinking and communicating, particularly when it comes to issues of our material environment & its our resources (i.e. the land we inhabit, the foods we eat, the climate, etc. etc.) perhaps helping us to connect with our Mother again in a positive way (which would also reflect the re-union between spirit & matter as indicated by the Saturn-Neptune conjunction). That said, although it was in 2024, we should still acknowledge the importance of the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction that took place at a degree nearby, and its proximity to Algol, traditionally considered the most "evil" star in the Heavens. It is true that the last time Jupiter & Uranus met in the fixed earth sign before this, the seeds of World War 2 had already started to germinate, although it may not have yet been given a name. With both Jupiter & then, Uranus entering Gemini quickly after, causing the war to escalate, it is hard not to predict that these same transits will unfold in a similar way from the events of today.
However, while Saturn in Aries may display a competitive, aggressive and even violent nature, it is important to remember that nothing is set in stone and the power of using our own will to control reality is highlighted here. While Venus (planet of peace) is detriment, taken captive into his homeland of Aries, the warrior god, Mars, is in Leo, a fire sign where it can still perform mighty & strong and as fierce as a lion. However, these planets aren't enemies but lovers and they still meet by trine. Likewise, while Saturn's ingress chart shows that Moon in Taurus is aspected by a square to Pluto in Aquarius, indicating fearsome powerful struggles and intense paranoia, it is important to remember that the Moon is still in its exalted sign, and ultimately, the Moon is more about our own emotions anyway. In other words, while I am not denying the existence of negativity in the outside world (as my own experience proves it very well does) I am suggesting that this negativity is often exacerbated by our own minds. By using Saturn's transit through Aries as an opportunity for self-control, and therefore self-determination, we can potentially influence these energies into moving in a more constructive direction.

Conclusion
Of course, these transits will not affect every individual the same way or to the same extent. It's influence will be determined by what house the sign of Aries occupies in your chart, as well as any aspects it makes to the planets and/or angles in your birth chart. Those with major placements in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are likely to experience the most intense effects from this transit. Those with significant placements in the fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are also likely to feel its effects but in a gentler way. That said, for a more in-depth analysis of how this transit will affect you on a personal level, it is best for you to book a reading with a professional astrologer. You might be used to seeing horoscopes included in these articles along with my history-informed predictions. Unfortunately, given the long time it's been taking me to write them lately (along with the massive decrease in all of our attention spans), I had to split the article up into two parts. Part 2, which gets into historical examples of Saturn's transit through Aries, as well as my predictions for this one, is almost finished and I will publish it soon. If I have time after that (which hopefully, I will) and my upcoming articles about Jupiter's transit through Cancer and Uranus's entrance into Gemini (plus also, my articles about the United States natal chart and its upcoming Solar Return), I will write a more general article about how these transits (particularly Jupiter & Saturn) will affect each sign throughout the course of the next year or so.
