Introduction
The 11th article in my astrological compatibility series focuses on the relationship between Aries and Libra. It is my fifth article about Aries and my third article about Libra. I started this series because relationships are one of my favorite topics: why is it that we gravitate so strongly to some personalities and clash so hard with others? Before you read it, however, there are a couple of things, I'd like you to keep in mind:
1. The article is less about "whether or not" Aries and Libra are compatible and more about how the two signs interact
2. When I speak about the signs, I am referring to the archetypes; this article applies just as much to the Moon, Ascendant etc. as it does to the Sun.
3. To accurately assess the "astrological compatibility" between 2 individuals, you need to look at the whole chart; for example, by scheduling a synastry reading with me.

4. "Compatibility" is about more than romance; this article also applies to friendships, family dynamics etc. (well, maybe not the picture below but most of the actual writing).

Compatibility Between Aries & Libra Placements
Aries, the ram, and Libra, the scales of balance, are opposite signs, which means they are 180 degrees apart from each other on the zodiacal wheel. While they don't share an element, they do share both modality and polarity. Opposite signs are interesting to study in synastry because while they can cause conflict at times, they are more often than not a strong indicator of attraction. Some astrologers even believe that opposite signs represent two signs of the same coin, referring to them as "sister signs" instead. Their similarities connect them to each other while their differences balance each other out, as each possesses traits that the other sign lacks.
In this case, Aries and Libra are both "masculine," or Yang signs. They also both belong to the cardinal modality. However, Aries is a fire sign ruled by Mars while Libra is an air sign ruled by Venus, which makes them very different. At the most basic level of understanding, the ram is stereotyped to be more of a fighter while the scales is symbol of peace-keeping, so where are their similarities? Well, each cardinal sign is associated with the beginning of a new season, making them the leaders of the zodiac. More specifically, the Sun moves into Aries at the Vernal Equinox, or the first day of Spring, and enters Libra on the Autumnal Equinox, marking the start of Fall, when days and nights are of equal length. In a way, this makes balance an essential theme for both signs. Of course, one difference is that during Aries Season, the days get longer, while in Libra Season, the days start getting shorter (hence why the Sun is considered exalted in one sign and fall in the other). As far as their personalities are concerned, as cardinal signs, both Aries and Libra like to be in control but their approaches to leadership are very, very different. These different styles can make them the perfect pair, if they manage to work together. If competing, however, it can make them the worst of enemies.

As a fire sign ruled by Mars and represented by the ram, Aries is headstrong, and quick to make decisions. Of the two signs, their status as leaders is probably the more obvious. Ruled by Venus, Libras might appear passive at first glance. The sign of the scales are always going back and forth, hesitant to commit to any one thing. As air signs, their need for 'leadership' or 'control' is more focused on the realm of ideas, ideals and relationship with others. They consider all sides of a situation, in an effort to figure out the most fair, balanced and harmonious decision for all wherever possible. This is a huge contrast to from the ram's more self-centered and/or impulsive nature, which can get them into a lot of unnecessary trouble from time to time. While the courage and enthusiasm of an Aries can help inspire Libra to move forward and actually get things done when stuck in a state of "laziness" or analysis paralysis, it is a mistake to view Libra as "indecisive" in the sense that they'd prefer someone else to make choices for them. In reality, while slow to draw conclusions, Libra still wants the last word. After all, when Aries gets into a rage, or when Aries wants something, they can easily become blind to the consequences, leading to regrets, something that Libra can help them see ahead of time. In essence, archetypally, Aries has the authority of a military sergeant, Libra has the authority of a judge. Ultimately, both signs have skills and traits that can benefit the other.
At the most basic level, these signs are ruled by the cosmic lovers. Their ruling planets , Mars (ruler of Aries) and Venus (ruler of Libra) are named after the god-goddess couple. Aries' ruling planet, Mars, the god of war and physical fitness, is associated with masculinity, while Libra's planetary ruler, Venus, is the goddess of love and beauty, associated with femininity. On some level, archetypally, this should make them the perfect couple, and indeed, there is bound to be a lot of passion involved when these two get together! The key question is do they have anything in common? As sister signs, I would say yes, like 2 sides of the same coin. Despite being known as a "warrior" in reality, while quick to get angry, they are often just as quick to cool down and move on. There is a childlike simplicity to Aries direct, action-orientated nature that can be endearing, especially for a sign like Libra that shares a similar charm. So, in addition to passion & fun, there can be good communication here too, as when conflict arises, both signs are usually likely to discuss the problem, solve it and move forward without any need for holding grudges.

That said, opposites do not only attract but create a lot of problems too, and the passion between them can just as easily lead to war as to love. It's possible for Aries, for example, to grow impatient with Libra's idealistic, philosophical and diplomatic nature, preferring to act rather than talk. While Libra looks at everything in shades of grey, Aries tends to be more black and white, and may get frustrated or even angry with Libra's hesitancy to give a straight answer. Meanwhile, Libra likes peace and harmony, so can easily feel put off with Aries' temper tantrums, which they view as childish and immature. It's also. possible Aries might view Libra as weak, not a good feeling for a sign that likes everything to be equal and fair, while Libra just views Aries as domineering and/or unnecessarily mean. Libra likes to question, understand and debate, while Aries can get angry easily at the slightest things, without an objective reason, which can sometimes lead to circular arguments and fights that are seemingly never-ending. Honestly, if you don't mind me inserting my subjective experience in here for a moment, as a Libra Sun myself, I've had one romantic relationship with an Aries Sun, and this was a person who liked to fight: but what he romanticized as "passion" I just saw as a pointless headache (and on that same personal note, I've had positive friendships with Aries Suns so I know that not every Aries-Libra couple is like this).
Basically, this is a match that can work well if both signs remain in balance, and harmony, with the other. However, if the scales of this relationship are tipped in a way that creates unequal power dynamics in favor of one person rather than the other, there will be only tension and animosity between them, since both signs like to be in control. This can be a very love/hate, make/break, combination, essentially, and the potential for it to be all these things at once, a rollercoaster ride of a relationship full of both the most exhilarating highs and the most depressing lows: the dynamic works better when met somewhere in the middle of these intensities.
