Introduction

The 12th article in my astrological compatibility series focuses on the relationship between Aries and Scorpio. It is my sixth article about Aries and my second about Scorpio. I started this series because relationships are one of my favorite topics: why is it that we gravitate so strongly to some personalities and clash so hard with others? Before you read it, however, there are a couple of things, I'd like you to keep in mind:

1. The article is less about "whether or not" Aries and Scorpio are compatible and more about how the two signs interact.

 2. When I speak about the signs, I am referring to the archetypes; this article applies just as much to the Moon, Ascendant etc. as it does to the Sun.

3. To accurately assess the "astrological compatibility" between 2 individuals, you need to look at the whole chart; for example, by scheduling a synastry reading with me.

4. "Compatibility" is about more than romance; this article also applies to friendships, family dynamics etc.

Compatibility Between Aries & Scorpio Placements

Aries and Scorpio are "inconjunct" which means that they are 150 degrees apart from each other on the zodiacal wheel. Traditionally, this was not even seen as an aspect at all because it means they have nothing in common, as they share neither element, modality or even polarity. However, unlike most inconjunct signs, the relationship between Aries and Scorpio is a little bit different because they do share a ruling planet. Scorpio is a fixed water sign and Aries is a cardinal fire sign. While this does suggest many differences, both of these signs are ruled by the planet Mars, suggesting that there are some surprising similarities, as well. Aries represents Mars in in its "Yang" or "masculine" form, while Scorpio represents Mars in it's "Yin" or "feminine" form. The only other zodiac sign pairing to share this unique relationship with each other are their opposite signs, Taurus and Libra, who despite the inconjunction, are both ruled by the planet Venus.

Essentially, for an inconjunct pairing, Aries and Scorpio are actually surprisingly similar, due their shared relationship with the planet, Mars. Mars is the planet of action, assertion, anger, passion, energy, motivation and drive. Both of these signs are very intense, active, competitive and goal-orientated. They know what they want and will do anything to go after it. They both have strong willpower and intense desires, too. These similarities of personality can not only naturally place them in similar circles, where they're likely to meet and click, but they can create a strong sense of understanding with each other, as well, that's conducive to a relationship forming. The passion between them is likely to be very hot too, creating an intense chemistry in romantic relationships especially!

That said, of course, we cannot forget that the red planet was named after the god of war, showing that these are similarities that can sometimes be problematic too. The passion involved in the dynamic between these two signs can be a bit of double-edged sword. These are two of the most competitive signs, and neither are willing to back down from a fight, which could create problems should conflicts arise in the relationship. Granted, being ruled by Mars also means that both signs actually enjoy a challenge, typically speaking, but being attracted to a certain dynamic doesn't always necessarily mean its a healthy one. At the end of the day, Aries and Scorpio are inconjunct, which means that they are very different. While both of them are passionate and driven, they go about things in very different ways, which could make things easier or more difficult depending on how well they can manage to understand and work with one another.

For example, the flame of an Aries burns hot & bright but can also burn out more quickly, while Scorpio is more like hot water that takes its time to boil. The passion may be kept buried underneath the surface before it finally explodes. One potential way this can be applied to romantic situations is that while the fun and upbeat Aries can be quick to move on to the next thing once their needs are satisfied, Scorpio is often the type to love for life, quietly obsessing over their love interest from afar before making their move. Likewise, Aries has a temper but is usually more quick to forgive and forget, while as water signs, Scorpio is often more sensitive than meets the eye. They can be more hurt than they let on, and if so, they are more likely to hold grudges and in some cases, even plot revenge when crossed, in which case, the more child-like and even naive Aries may be confused about what hit them. The thing is, as a cardinal fire sign, the ram is usually more direct and straightforward about their wants, feelings and needs, while as a fixed water sign, the scorpion is more emotionally complex, often having many layers to their personality. Scorpios tend to be more private, sometimes even secretive, which the blunt-no nonsense Aries may find it difficult to put up with. On the other hand, however, a Scorpio may look down on the childishness of Aries' outbursts and their seeming lack of emotional control, or even find them too simplistic for their tastes, compared to the depth they crave. Meanwhile, they may wind up drawing conclusions based on misunderstanding by reading too deeply into Aries intentions than what's beyond the surface: with an Aries, what you see usually really is what you get.

Now that we've got those differences and potential conflicts out of the way, however, it is worth emphasizing that Aries and Scorpio are perhaps an underrated match. Sure, Aries may generally be more loud and extroverted while Scorpio is typically more quiet and introverted, but underneath those surface level traits, they really are very similar, causing them to make a very strong power couple, practically fated to win. Basically, these are two signs that whether they admit it or not, often enjoy the thrills of the chase, and have fun with games of cat-and-mouse, making for an exciting and passionate match!

Together, their different strengths and methods of fighting can make them a great team, and if competing with each other, the intrigue and challenge will keep them hooked. While yes, an Aries is often the type to get bored easily by what once excited them, which can hurt the heart of a Scorpio who knows what they want, the mysterious nature of a Scorpio is powerful enough to keep the Aries guessing, which could lower the probability of a more negative outcome. On a similar note, a lot of Scorpios, are used to feeling suspicion and distrust, so could find the bold nature of Aries refreshing in comparison, even if it leads to little arguments here or there. Meanwhile, while they may be labelled by other signs as aggressive or combative, a Scorpio understands an Aries "darker" traits and can more easily empathize, making them feel accepted for who they are. So, while as with any two signs, things can go either way, this can be, and often is, a very strong match!
