A Short Introduction on Saturn in Aries

On May 24th, Saturn, the great task-master and time-keeper of our solar system, left the watery waves of Pisces for the fierce fires of Aries. Aside from a brief dip retrograde into the sign of the fish (lasting from September 1st of this year until February 13th of 2026, when it returns to Aries), Saturn will remain in the sign of the ram until April 12th, 2028 when it goes into Taurus, the sign of the bull. In Part 1 of this article, which I titled "Make Your Own Music," I wrote a little bit more about what this means, what it's like to have it in your birth chart, what you might be able to expect from this transit, and the aspects it makes, including its historic conjunction to Neptune. I had to separate the article into two parts due to the long length, but to summarize it here, as best as I can, Saturn is a planet associated with maturity, responsibility, restriction, control and challenge, while Aries is a sign associated with aggression, action, and independence, hence the title (plus, I wanted to keep the music theme, since I titled my Neptune in Aries articles "Lets Sing A New Tune.")

It's actually this article, Part 2, that I believe to be the more interesting one. It's here that we'll actually be making some predictions, particularly in the realm of mundane astrology. First, we'll look back at some historical examples of what sort of events coincided with the transit of Saturn through Aries. Then, we'll use those examples, in conjunction with our knowledge of astrological archetypes, to make some predictions about how we might expect the present transit of Saturn in Aries to affect us in the near-future.

History

Now that we've gone over the symbolism, it helps to take a look back at history for examples of how this energy can play out, because often, the history will repeat itself. Saturn's last transit through the sign of Aries occurred from April 1996 to February 1999 which also means that those born during those years will be experiencing their first Saturn Return (and good luck to them). Can we expect Father Time to transport us back to the mid-late 90's, and what should we be prepared to experience, if so?

While, as a toddler/kindergartener during this period, my memory is colored brightly in nostalgia, the start of Saturn's shift into Aries on April 7th, 1996, corresponded with several acts of war throughout the globe. For example, it was only a few days later that Israel launched its Operation Grapes of Wrath in Lebanon in retaliation against Hezbollah, which included the Qana Massacre, where the Israeli military killed over 100 Lebanese civilians. On a related note, that same month, the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Israeli government both dropped their respective clauses recognizing the legitimacy of each other's states. Other wars took place elsewhere, such as in Kosovo and Yugoslavia, while the conflicts of the Iraq disarmament crisis (that would later be used to justify "the war on terror" in the wake of the next decade) brewed between the United States and Iraq. Meanwhile, the Troubles in Northern Ireland continued with violence from the IRA & Ulster loyalists disrupting the daily lives of civilians (both Catholic & Protestant) in the region, at times spilling over into other parts of both Ireland & the UK, although this would ultimately end in a ceasefire with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Since Aries is the warrior of the zodiac, it only makes sense, that the governments of the world - represented by Saturn - would be preoccupied with war during Saturn's transit through this sign. However, while the world was indeed consumed with conflict & war during this period, Saturn's function is also to limit and restrict: limits and restrictions were placed on the warrior archetype associated with Aries through the promotion of ceasefires, peace treaties and nuclear disarmament campaigns.

The transit coincided with the display of other types of martial violence, as well. For example, on April 28th, 1996, a deadly bombing took place on a bus in Pakistan while on that same day in Port Arthur, Australia, a single gunman unleashed a massacre that the country would never forget. In this case, Saturn's association with government would be displayed through the increased regulations & restrictions on guns that the Australian government placed in response to this event. Similar events would take place throughout the world. This was a time of widespread gun violence, particularly in the United States, which included mass shootings at schools and other public places. While the Columbine shootings technically took place shortly after Saturn's ingress into Taurus, this was just one of the more infamous events that reflected a growing trend that began during Saturn's transit through Aries. On a similar note (regarding the merging of zodiacal energies that seems to happen during the transition of planets into different signs), while the Heaven's Gate cult's mass suicide, during the Halle-Bopp comet, showed a continuation of the escapism & cultism I discussed in my Saturn in Pisces article, this event took place during Saturn's entrance into Aries, showing how these trends took a more violent turn. The infamous Oklahoma City bombings took place during this period, as well, with the bomber, Timothy McVeigh, experiencing his own Saturn Return in Aries at the time. Essentially, the bottom line is, that while Saturn's transit through Aries was a very violent period, the restraining nature of Saturn also meant that there were a lot more efforts to curb this violence. For example, while the United Kingdom would place a total ban on handguns, at this time, across the Atlantic, the U.S. president, Bill Clinton would campaign on a platform of being "tough on crime." Meanwhile, campaigns for stricter gun control laws and/or the censorship of violent media would also gain in popularity.

In addition to war & violence, as a Mars-ruled sign, Aries is associated with accident, emergency, and the element of fire. Many accidents would occur during this period, as a result of fire, electrocution, and even rocket fuel. Nature had its own way of reflecting the elemental nature of this fire sign by causing volcanos to erupt. Of course, Saturn's motive is usually to contain. It should come as no surprise, then, that the United States emergency alert system was created during this transit: sometimes, the only way to contain a threat is by alerting people before it happens.

In any case, the pop culture of the time largely reflected these trends, astrologically speaking. Action-orientated films, such as The Matrix, Fight Club and the cult films of Quinten Tarantino, were particularly popular, conforming to the active nature of the martial zodiac sign. This theme of action, sometimes taken to violent extremes, was seen, also, in the popular video games of the time. Musically, popular genres included industrial rock, and gangster rap, the latter reflecting the violence of the era through the shootings of its most iconic artists, Tupac & Biggie Smalls. However, the simplicity of Saturn in Aries was reflected in the bubblegum pop music of the era's boy bands and girl groups, more optimistic Britpop bands as well as the more fun, goofy, and/or romantic, movies & TV series, associated with the era (i.e. teen movies like Clueless or 10 Things I Hate About You). The fashion of the time, likewise, reflected the cardinal fire sign's bold simplicity with trends such as bright neon/pastel colors, streetwear, casual clothing, and minimalist looks, while rave fashion & animal print patterns reflected the ram's more wilder nature. On another note, this was the "Dot Com Boom" with the spreading popularity of the World Wide Web just starting to take its shape with dial-up connections and the beginning of e-commerce.

Other newsworthy events to occur include the controversial Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal & impeachment in the United States, the murder of Princess Diana in the United Kingdom, and the minting of the euro currency in the European Union. For many people, these events would have changed the public's perception of their government or nation, in some way or other, which we could say is thematic of the Saturn in Aries transit.

As usual, some interesting scientific advances took place during this period as well, including some very controversial ones relating to the basic nature of life itself, relating to the nature of Aries' status of the zodiac's "first sign", a pioneering energy as basic as it is bold. This included the cloning of Dolly the Sheep,   the discovery of an "African Eve" 100,000 to 200,000 years ago supporting the theory of human evolution, and the first genetically-modified three parent baby. On somewhat of a related note (in relation to the controversy surrounding the idea of technological interference into the natural progress of human life), euthanasia care, and the "right to die" movement, gained support at this time. A controversial theory regarding a connection between autism and vaccines was discovered at this time, but later retracted, nevertheless becoming a foundational idea behind the anti-vax movement of today. Perhaps, similar fears regarding the interference of technology on children's natural developments could be found in the controversy surrounding a bizarre incident in Japan where thousands of children suffered epilepsy after watching a Pokemon anime. On an entirely unrelated note, this transit coincided with the scientific discovery of an expanding universe, as well as NASA's launching of the Mars Polar Lander, fitting for Saturn's transit through a Mars-ruled sign.

Prior to the mid-late 90's transit we've just discussed, Saturn last transited Aries between 1967 and 1969. These were the Vietnam War years, and a time of intense activism overall, although this was likely exacerbated by the era's Uranus-Pluto conjunction in Virgo. Before that, Saturn was last in Aries between 1937 and 1940, coinciding with the beginnings of World War 2, which I am not going to lie may be a bit scary considering how many other current transits also resemble this era of history. On that note, if we jump way back to the past, we can see that the last time Saturn's transit through Aries was accompanied by Pluto in Aquarius was 1790 to 1793, corresponding with the French Revolution, including the Reign of Terror, as well as the aftermath of the American one.

Predictions

It's funny how history repeats itself, isn't it? Or no, really, it's just sad. Already, a war between Israel, Palestine, Lebanon and Hezbollah has gotten worse. Shortly after Saturn entered into Aries at the end of last month, the news became increasingly dominated by reports of large-scale violence between the nations of Iran and Israel. Recently, the United States involved itself with Donald Trump's decision to strike Iran. Unfortunately, the conflict does not end there, as there are plenty of others, including in Gaza, Sudan, Russia & Ukraine, as well as India & Pakistan, the latter occurring only a few days after Saturn entered the fiery cardinal sign. While yes, there have recently been reports of ceasefire, suggestive of the planet's restraining nature, with Saturn stationing retrograde on July 13th, one cannot help but wonder how long this will actually last...

Such news may understandably trigger fears of World War 3, especially when considering the closeness of this current astrological landscape to the stars of 2nd one, as mentioned above in the history section. For example, history suggests that Uranus's recent transit into Gemini earlier this month (expect an article on this soon!) might mean an increase in American involvement in world wars. Like a domino, this might lead to increased involvement from other NATO nations as well, which of course raises some concerns, especially in light of the frightening level of nuclear capabilities that humanity has now. Meanwhile, the recent transit of Neptune in Aries is similar to that of the American Civil War and considering the divided state of the nation under the current administration, this doesn't seem like such a fantastical idea, and its not the only country torn apart by ideological division either. Given the way these historical cycles often tend to play out, I can't help but wonder if Northern Ireland may be particularly at risk of further conflict at this time. Honestly? Neptune in Aries' historical link with the re-drawing of national borders, whether through unification or partition, and the fight for greater sovereignty, leads me to consider the possibility that this transit may very well change the way our world map looks altogether, especially when you throw the historically revolutionary Pluto in Aquarius into the equation!

When all is said and done, however, personally, I still have lots of hope! While the stars and planets can give us a sense of the current energy, it is up to humanity, as a collective species, how we decide to use it. So, let's use it for the better! The planet traditionally labelled as "the great malefic" is weaker in Aries than in other signs, considering its the sign of its fall, so that right there is a good sign, no? The flipside to that can be interpreted through a positive lens too, in that Saturn can potentially act as a sort of taming influence on the aggressive nature of Aries, meaning that it will, in fact, lead to more ceasefires and peace treaties, and let's hope, even, an end to war throughout the world! The dark side can be seen in viewing Saturn as a symbol of government itself, which in Aries, is at war, possibly even with its own citizens. Of course, however, this also means that there is a very positive side to all this change & upheaval, given that our planet's governments are hardly, if ever, truly representative of the people. At the end of the day, this makes me think of so many more positive potentials than negative ones!

We do, of course, have to acknowledge the sad reality that despite Saturn's struggle in Aries, Saturn's determination to win can often mean that its own aggressive tendencies come out even stronger. Despite the "softer" reputation of Neptune, it's conjunction to Saturn is especially concerning, because this could lead to the idealization of the government, particularly in regards to military matters. Our world leaders may be seen as "strong, mighty, & powerful" divinely-appointed kings or maybe even a messianic religious figures, with each fight viewed as some sort of holy war. In general, the government could resort to deception (Neptune) to control (Saturn) the public, potentially even manipulating them into accepting martial law (Aries) and/or other violent means of social control. Otherwise, they may simply resort to covering it up and pretending it doesn't exist!

This is particularly relevant in regards to immigration laws, which makes some sense given the focus that both Saturn & Neptune in Aries have historically placed attention on matters of national sovereignty and the re-drawing of borders. While Neptune has a tendency to dissolve these borders, Saturn is fighting back by becoming so strict, even life-long citizens are being threatened with deportation from their home countries, while the walls that separate the nations in our apparently "globalized" world are being rebuilt with more iron & steel (which just so happen to be elements associated with the planet Saturn, of course). With Saturn in Aries, the punishments for breaking these laws appear to take on a more violent tone.

Meanwhile, in addition to war, there may be increased lesser-scale violence, crime and acts of terrorism, both big & small. The restrictive & prohibitive nature of Saturn could, on the other hand, mean more effort to curb all of this, just as it did in the past, through both activism and legislation. This might, for example, indicate ceasefires and peace treaties, as mentioned before. It might also indicate stricter gun control laws or let's hope, possibly, a straight-up ban on nuclear weapons altogether! Of course, as touched upon in the last paragraph, the violence associated with Saturn in Aries could simply be used to justify government paranoia and over-reach into our private lives, such as mass surveillance through new technologies, particularly those powered by artificial intelligence (A.I.).

It is worth acknowledging, after all, that Saturn's last transit through Aries coincided with some interesting scientific & technological advances, as well, such as cloning as we discussed earlier in the history section. This disrupted the foundation of our understanding of natural life as we know it, and true to the nature of Saturn, in a weird way this was by aiming to prolong it. A similar situation could happen now with A.I. (i.e. maybe with attempts upload our consciousness onto a computer or something crazy like that) or possibly even further advances in cloning. This is scary, not necessarily because the technology itself is inherently "bad", but because considering the nature of our current system, such technologies are almost certainly intended to be used for control, and since its Aries we are talking about, this could very well include militaristic uses, as well. I am particularly concerned about the United States' StarGate project and Donald Trump's partnership with Peter Thiel, the technofeudalist behind Palantir. Elon Musk's Neuralink project is also frightening and possibly (despite claims of doing the opposite) aims to threaten individualism altogether by allowing corporations and governments alike (as if they weren't already the same thing!) entrance into the only possible semblance of privacy or even control we have left: our minds. It is the nature of Saturn to control and in medical astrology, the sign of Aries rules the head, so it makes some sense. Other brain-interface technologies are being developed elsewhere throughout the world and while it sounds like a science-fiction conspiracy theory, governments are already talking about potential uses for implementing them.

On a related note, I'd also argue that out-of-control capitalism, corporatism, classism, and digitalism (i.e. the additional overstimulation that comes from being bombarded with people's feelings & thoughts on social media, let alone ad after ad) have combined to create an increase in people who are mentally, and/or even physically, ill and/or disabled. Who knows? Maybe this is even intentional! The Saturn/Neptune transit in Pisces, along with their recent entrance into Aries, has made it clear that this over-burdening over-stimulation has lead to a breakdown in social & communication skills (and neurotypical people, in particular, if I am being honest), draining us of any time or energy to talk to people if it is not strictly necessary. The current obsession that people like Robert F. Kennedy and even Elon Musk himself have with autism, ADHD & other forms of neurodivergence is a reflection of this, which reminds me of the conspiracy theories around autism & vaccines that became prevalent during Saturn's last transit through this sign. However, rather than address the actual root cause of neurodivergent (and/or really, just simply human!) struggles as they claim to want to do, it is more likely that they will use these so-called "epidemics" to justify more of that same system of control that has caused the number of people struggling to go up in the first place.

As for popular media, it is quite likely that Saturn in Aries will once again bring an increase in action films / TV shows, and bold, fiery, loud & colorful styles of art, music, & fashion (all aesthetics and creative mediums, in all honesty, and possibly even the formation of new mediums & new aesthetics altogether). As with Neptune in Aries, Saturn here could indicate a return to realism, bluntness, or getting back to basics. This could mean an increased interest in sports & fitness, as well. It is possible that people will want to return to nature and a more active, athletic, and/or possibly even wild lifestyle, in response to the control-obsessed technofascist militaristic-police state discussed in the paragraphs above. This emphasis on individualism, independence, entrepreneurship, and the motivation to choose your own destiny brings me back to the positive potentials of Saturn's transit through Aries...

So, here's the good news!!! Saturn in Aries is essentially here to empower us. It's here to inspire us! Saturn is a planet of responsibility, and in Aries, a sign of individualism & independence, it's essentially here to show us that each and everyone of us has the power to create the world we want, ...at least to some degree. Don't get me wrong: this isn't some "love and light" toxic positivity bullshit. Please read just about all of the above paragraphs for a list of just a few of the examples of how/why this society sucks, and no, you are not responsible for it, you did not "manifest" this mess, what happened to you is 1000% not your fault nor are you "a victim" for reacting to it. In fact: it's good you're reacting to it! That's exactly how you can "take responsibility" toward making a change in this world! Responsibility is literally your ability to respond. Your rage isn't "negative" but a force that can be channeled for good. To quote my teenage celebrity crush (John Lydon lol),"anger is an energy." This is how Saturn's transit through Aries can help motivate us into actually taking action and doing something about the many problems that get us down!

When I say "each and everyone one of us has the power to create the world we want," I do not mean that we live in our own little bubbles that only we can imagine, or that the weight of every little thing that happens in the world is somehow on our own shoulders & ours alone, but that we do have the power to make our own choices, the ability to respond to the "world" that we didn't create. Instead of going along with what everyone else is doing, we can say "no" and/or "yes" to the way things we are not. Neptune's presence in Aries emphasizes the power of our imagination, yes, and the power of love over hate - not because our imagination automatically causes things to materialize, but because that's the source from which all actions are born. Remember, once again that Aries is like the baby of the zodiac, the first sign: a new beginning, a symbol of innocence, a sign that we are returning to the New Eden.

Conclusion

Of course, these transits will not affect every individual the same way or to the same extent. It's influence will be determined by what house the sign of Aries occupies in your chart, as well as any aspects it makes to the planets and/or angles in your birth chart. Those with major placements in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are likely to experience the most intense effects from this transit. Those with significant placements in the fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are also likely to feel its effects but in a gentler way. That said, for a more in-depth analysis of how this transit will affect you on a personal level, it is best for you to book a reading with a professional astrologer. To book a reading with me, you can click here.

Some of you might remember that I used to include horoscopes with these articles and I would like to get back to doing that, if only it didn't take so long for me to write them up (and if only our attention spans haven't all massively decreased, as a collective in general). That said, so long as I am able to finish my (long overdue) articles about Jupiter's transit through Cancer and Uranus's entrance into Gemini by the end of this week, I will write a more general article about how these transits (particularly Jupiter & Saturn but possibly Uranus too) will affect each sign throughout the course of the next year or so.
