Just A Phase: Mercury Retrograde in Cancer ~ June/July 2026

Introduction

On the 29th of June, the same day as the Full Moon in Capricorn, Mercury will be stationing Retrograde at 26º 27 of Cancer, where it will continue its journey backwards until July 23rd, when it goes direct at 16º 19' . Let's discuss how this transit might affect us here on Earth! Since the pre-shadow period took place on the 12th or 13th of June (depending on where you are in the world!) it's possible that some of you may have gotten a preview of what to expect already.

A retrograde planet is one that appears to be moving backwards from the vantage point of the earth. From an astrologer's perspective, this means that the energies symbolized by the planet are also directed "backwards" or "inward" instead of functioning in its usual way. In Roman mythology, Mercury is considered to be the "messenger of the gods," ruling over letters, divination and pretty much all forms of communication, as well as commerce and travel. Due to "his" ability to travel between two worlds, he is the god of translators and interpreters, but look out: he is also the god of tricksters, pranksters, and thieves. In astrology, Mercury represents the logical mind, intelligence and the way we think. Ruled by the mutable signs, Virgo (the virgin) and Gemini (the twins) (the signs opposite Pisces & Sagittarius, respectively) there is a dualistic nature to the planet that gave birth to the word "mercurial," (meaning unpredictable or changeable).

So, when Mercury goes Retrograde, you can expect delays and disruption around areas such as travel, technology, communication and thought. Misunderstandings may occur and/or you may gloss over important details. It is best to double-check your work and try your best to be as clear as you can when you communicate to avoid these mishaps. That said, while these periods can definitely be unpredictable and maybe even a little bit chaotic, this doesn't necessarily make them negative, especially if you use this as a time for reflection rather than action. In fact, sometimes the unexpected can instead feel wonderfully fated. It's a good time for re-thinking, re-doing, and returning to the past, finishing up former projects and having clarifying conversations that you should have had long ago. Its a period often loaded with a feeling of magic & synchronicity, and a favored time for contemplation & meditation. Things from the past might come back to us during this time, as well, whether this be people (including but not limited to exes), situations, memories or a second chance at things we failed to achieve and/or learn the first time around.

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer, Summer 2026

While Mercury is the planet associated with the logical mind, Cancer is a sign ruled by the Moon, the "planet" or luminary associated with the subconscious or emotional mind. In other words, while Mercury represents our thoughts, the Moon represents our feelings, making this cardinal water sign one guided by intuition as opposed to rationality, but with Mercury in Cancer, perhaps the distinction between these two mental processes is blurry, if not completely meaningless. Individuals born with this placement tend to be blessed with high emotional intelligence, and a sharp memory, especially for all that is most meaningful, and sometimes, they even possess psychic gifts. As the planet of communication, Mercury tends to be a bit quieter in this sign, but inside, there's a lot going on, with flashes of insight happening at a rate so fast that it couldn't possibly be put into words. Of course, the crab's protective shell also has something to do with this quality of perhaps, introversion or shyness. This quality of self-defense is perhaps at the root of the psychic gifts possessed by this placement, as well, as the body often can make connections before the mind does, leading to gut feelings that protect us in times of danger.

As much as I'm tempted to advise everyone to "trust their gut," I have to take a step back (like a backwards-walking crab) and remember that ultimately we evolved our brains for a reason too. By this, I mean to say that there are times when trusting your gut is necessary, essential for survival, but what about those times when your stomach hurts over something inconsequential you imagined in your head? What about those times where instead of being led to a quick, life-saving decision, you're simply too sick to move? Maybe, you just ate too much, but there are also times when people mistake their anxiety for intuition, wrongly interpreting their subjective moods as the source of a more objective truth. Sometimes our "bad feelings" are simply normal human emotions, like sadness or fear, rather than predictions, and instead of leading to anything productive, the insistence on the doom & gloom may wind up essentially manifesting those fears into reality in situations that otherwise wouldn't be the case. Basically, with Mercury Retrograde in Cancer, it's possible that we may be more vulnerable to false assumptions like this. This could affect our interactions with people too, such as negative impressions being formed not by anything the person actually did, but the memories & feelings they subconsciously evoke in our minds that we project onto them unfairly, leading to misunderstandings.

Of course, in a culture that exalts the "rational", the explainable & the scientific, while devaluing all that is "mystical", mysterious, personal or subjective, I can see some good coming from this Mercury Retrograde period in Cancer, potentially, as well. After all, Mercury Retrograde is all about reflection, right, and isn't that water element does? Like, when you look into a pool of water, you'll see your reflection. Mercury's moving backwards, just like a crab, and I can't help but feel like there's something that seems natural & almost fitting about this, so I can see some benefit coming from this sign's association with the past. Maybe, this transit can help people reconnect with the intuitive intelligence within them that they usually ignore. Maybe, it can help us to understand ourselves & our emotions a lot more fully & in depth, as we look back & make meaning of our personal histories. I could even see past life memories being explored, and our family histories being better understood.

It's important to note that both the positive & the negative possibilities listed above are not simply due to my interpretation of Mercury Retrograde in Cancer alone, but they also seem supported by some of the aspects it makes to other planets, and/or other relevant transits coinciding with it. To understand what I mean by this, let's take a look at the event chart attached below and I'll try to explain more fully:

I'll start with the good news, first, which is that although separating, Mercury is still conjunct Jupiter (at 29'53º) at the moment of its retrograde. Jupiter is the great benefic, a planet of luck & abundance, and most importantly, it is actually exalted in the sign of Cancer, making it even stronger! So, for example, this might indicate serendipitous coincidences & positive opportunities somehow connected with the past, or even what seems like a mistake may lead to something amazing that was ultimately meant to be. This definitely helps to mitigate anything negative indicated by Mercury Retrograde, I'd say, as it seems to present the mishaps associated with this transit as opportunities for learning & growth, since Jupiter is a planet of expansion. It's this growth factor that is really essential to what I said about Mercury Retrograde in Cancer being such a helpful time for reflection on the past & reconnecting with our inner selves. By understanding our pasts more clearly, and how they shape our present emotions & behaviors, we can learn how to shape our futures in a more positive direction. In other words, this self-reflection helps us to grow! It's interesting too that Jupiter happens to be in the last degree of Cancer, before moving into Leo, the very next day. This makes me feel like this Mercury Retrograde period may give us extra time to wrap up any lessons or reflections gained during the last year Jupiter was in Cancer, especially anything connected to our roots & the past, allowing us to create something new & beautiful from it with the planet's shift into Leo!

Probably the most important thing to mention, however, is that Mercury will be going Retrograde on the day of a Full Moon. While I would find this worth mentioning in any sign that Mercury or the Moon was in, the fact that Mercury Retrograde is in Cancer, a sign ruled by the Moon, makes this especially essential. The changeable emotions linked to the phases of the Moon give this sign a reputation for moodiness, and with the Sun also in the sign of the crab (at 7'59º), that means the Full Moon is in it's opposite sign, Capricorn, another fact that is of high importance. As Cancer's opposite, Capricorn is the sign of the Moon's detriment. This means that the Moon tends to be uncomfortable when in the sign of the goat, a cardinal earth sign ruled by the malefic, Saturn. This combination of transits can make us especially emotional, at this time, and our feelings especially intense. Of course, the Full Moon can be an illuminating influence too, and its possible that our heightened moods are due to the revelation of some painful truth about the past that was nonetheless necessary for us to discover, in order to move forward. However, it's important to remember that feelings, much like astrological transits themselves, come & go, and despite the intensity & pain of what we may be feeling now, it is ultimately a phase that will pass, much like the phases of the moon. The danger here is in becoming so overwhelmed by our moods that we forget this, leading us to act in irrational ways that actually bring about the mishaps & miscommunications associated with the challenges of Mercury Retrograde. This is where what I had written about false "gut feelings" caused by mistaking our negative emotion for intuition comes into the picture. Capricorn is less intuitive & more practical, a sign more at home in the world of material things that can be sensed, explained & controlled. This isn't to say that the Full Moon isn't emotional here, but Capricorn is an ambitious sign, that cares a lot what other people think, and with the Full Moon in Capricorn, such insecurities related to our reputation can be magnified & the repetition of society's platitudes, or feelings related to the judgement of others, may be mistaken for profound inner truths. In other words, I feel like these could be feelings with an explainable outside cause that isn't one worth listening to.

This negative possibility, of Mercury's Retrograde through Cancer, causing problems by us mistaking our subjective emotions for the objective truth, is further indicated by the Full Moon in Capricorn's square to Neptune at 4'24º Aries along with a wider square to Saturn at 14'07º of the Mars-ruled fire sign. The challenging nature of this Full Moon & its aspects makes the likelihood of being misunderstood or misunderstanding others even more likely. Neptune is a planet associated with things like delusion, illusion, and/or escapism, and it's square to the Full Moon & Sun will likely distort our vision of reality, potentially causing us to make those mistakes & mishaps Mercury Retrograde is so often associated with. The Neptune aspect places us all very much in our own feelings, to the point of myopia and losing sight of the bigger picture. However, while often Neptune is said to cause people to view the world through rose-colored glasses, with Saturn's involvement, it's probably more accurate to say we're wearing grey-colored glasses instead. Basically, mistakes & misunderstandings may increase due to an irrational (or let's just say, false) assumption that our worst fears are correct. This is something that you may want to be wary of during the course of this transit, and the day of the Full Moon especially.

Meanwhile, Mars, the sign that rules the sign of Aries, the ram, has just entered Gemini, a sign that Mercury rules. There, in the sign of the twins, it will be making a conjunction to Uranus. Unfortunately, this seems to be another potential sign of conflict and destruction, fights that happen suddenly and seemingly without warning. Gemini's reputation as unpredictable sign may indicate two-faced behavior or otherwise a feeling of being blindsided by the aggression of others (or blinding others by our own aggression), plus the planet Uranus is unpredictable in itself. This could potentially indicate freak accidents, for example. While at the level of political astrology, this aspect has evoked fears of war for many. Looking at the relation of this aspect to Mercury's Retrograde period, however, I feel like on an individual level, mistakes & misunderstandings may arise from impulsive behavior, especially of the argumentative kind. So perhaps, such disasters can be mitigated by thinking before we act or speak, which is normally advised during Mercury Retrograde's period anyway. Of course, the square to the North Node at 2'39º Pisces & the South Node at that same degree of Virgo (yet another sign ruled by Mercury) might very well indicate something fated here, so I can't promise it can be avoided completely, at least not for everyone, but this aspect might also suggest that whatever happens is needed for us in order to grow.

Mercury Direct in Cancer, Summer 2026

Mercury will finally station Direct on the 23rd of July at 16º 19' Cancer putting an end to the retrograde period. We should better be able to understand our emotions at this time and have a better sense of how to put them into words that others understand without triggering their negative emotions too deeply.

However, Mercury will still be in it's post-shadow period until August 10th, the same day it leaves the sign of Cancer for the sign of Leo. So it's possible things may not fully go back to normal until then.

For more insight into what we might expect when Mercury goes Direct, it might help to look at the event chart below:

On one hand, Mercury's station Direct is challenged by a square to Saturn at 14'44º Aries, but on the other hand, it is also positively aspected by a sextile to Venus at 15'34º Virgo. This might mean that we might find ourselves having to face the consequences of whatever mistakes or misunderstandings took place during Mercury Retrograde. While it may be tempting to use the transit as an excuse, realistically, it seems that you may not be able to avoid accountability once Mercury moves Direct. However, it seems there is a silver lining here too in that any practical steps made to correct your behavior will have a positive impact on relationships going forward!

Apart from that, it's interesting to see that while Cancer's ruling planet, the Moon, was in Detriment at the time Mercury stationed Retrograde, when it stations Direct in Cancer, the Moon will be at 28'55º Scorpio, the sign of its fall. This can indicate some intense emotional struggles may still need to be dealt with in the aftermath of the retrograde period, but it seems that this may include some important and essential truths that can benefit your life & development going forward. Cancer & Scorpio are both water signs, after all! Seeing the Sun at 1'06º of its home sign, Leo, assures me of this, especially because it's also conjunct Jupiter at 5'10º. While the opposition to Pluto (Scorpio's modern co-ruler, interestingly enough!) at 4'21º Aquarius (another sign ruled by Saturn) seems to confirm that this Mercury Retrograde period may result in some possible challenges & emotional power struggles that will still need to be dealt with in the aftermath of this transit, these seem to be the sorts of struggles that build our character and make us stronger. Jupiter is about luck & blessings but also about growth, and with the Sun involved in it's home sign of Leo, this growth is likely to revolve around the development of qualities such as strength, courage, confidence, creativity & self-love!

Conclusion

As some of you may know, in the past, I used to write horoscopes with these things. However, I have been very busy and honestly, if you would like to know more about how this retrograde will affect you personally, you are better off scheduling  a reading with me, by clicking here: but please remember to book at least three days in advance.

Apart from that, this Mercury in Retrograde period will most significantly affect those with angles or planets (particularly luminaries) between 11 and 30 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn). Overall, we can expect mishaps and misunderstandings to occur during this time, particularly in relation to heightened feelings and emotions. However, it is a good time for questioning and re-examining what it is we truly feel, what it is we truly need in our lives, and why are these things so important to us.
